|
| |
• Choosing
a Surgeon: |
| |
| |
Be
sure that the surgeon you choose |
| • |
|
| • |
is
certified by the American Board of Surgery. |
| • |
performs
more than one Bariatric Procedure. |
| • |
has
extensive experience in Bariatric Surgery. Simply
ask, "Simply ask, How many laparoscopic bariatric
cases have you done.?" |
| • |
can
recommend a support group you can attend. |
|
| |
|
| |
• Pre-Operative
Process: |
| |
| |
Once
you have chosen a surgeon, you will be required to |
| • |
Consult
with the doctor. A detailed history and physical
exam will be performed. This will include questions
about your previous weight loss attempts (diets, pills,
and other medical procedures). The doctor will
explain to you in detail the different bariatric surgical
procedures, their benefits and complications.
He will also give you the opportunity to ask him any
questions you might have about the surgery.
We encourage that you bring somebody (spouse, parent,
friend, or sister) to the visit. He/she will
need to understand the risks and benefits of this
surgery |
| • |
Basic
lab tests (depending on the co-morbid symptoms you
have) like comprehensive blood test, thyroid profiles,
sugar tolerance, etc. Sometimes you will need
the clearance from your cardiologist, Echocardiogram,
sleep study test and/or a pulmonary function test. |
| • |
Psychological
evaluation, if needed. |
| • |
Sometimes
and upon the results of your previous tests you will
be. referred to other specialists for consult and
clearance. |
| • |
Your
health insurance information will be required (if
you want to claim this through your insurance).
Sometimes your insurance will require additional information
and tests to approve your surgery. It may take
up to 2 or 3 months for the insurance company to approve
or deny it. Look for a doctor who is a patient
advocate and is willing to help you appeal the denials. |
| • |
Once
you have been approved by your insurance, you will
be notified. If you decide to go ahead with
the surgery, you will be scheduled for surgery at
your earliest convenience. |
| • |
A
week before your surgery, you will be required to
come in for a second visit with the doctor.
Also, pre-op tests will be performed 2 or 3 days before
your surgery at the designated hospital. |
| • |
We
recommend that you get the honest support of your
close family and friends. You will need their
cooperation and understanding after your surgery. |
