• Are
you a good candidate for bariatric/obesity surgery? |

Obesity
has become a growing problem in USA and Europe, and
as I stated earlier, Bariatric Surgery is at this
time the most effective and definitive treatment for
severe obesity. In the past, MORBID OBESITY
was described as "being 100 pounds over the ideal
weight" (I.B.W.). Currently BMI or Body
Mass Index is used to determine the different degrees
of obesity and the indication for surgery. BMI
is a number obtained dividing weight on Kg by the
square of your height in cm. We will be glad
to calculate your BMI for you. |
|
| |
| |
|
| • |
BMI from 35 to 39 with one or more of the following
co-morbid conditions (hypertension, diabetes, urinary
stress incontinence, sleep apnea, etc) is considered
MODERATE obesity. |
| • |
patients
with BMI higher than 55 |
| • |
BMI
from 40 to 49 is considered MORBID obesity. |
| • |
BMI from 50 to 59 is considered SUPER obesity. |
| • |
BMI more than 59 is considered SUPER-SUPER obesity.

• Are
you a good candidate for bariatric surgery? |
| |
|
| |
1. Are you 100 pounds overweight or have a BMI higher than
40?
OR
2. Are you 80 pounds overweight or have a BMI between 35
to 39 with one of the following co-morbid symptoms: diabetes,
sleep apnea, hypertension, coronary disease, reflux esophagitis,
amenorrhea, gout, infertility, urinary stress incontinence,
fatigue, dyspnea, immobility, degenerative arthritis, high
cholesterol, etc?
Based on the NH Consensus of 1978 and 1985 and on guidelines
recommended by the American Society for Clinical Nutrition
and the American Bariatric Society, if you answered "yes"
to either of these questions, you are a possible candidate
for Bariatric surgery. However, only your doctor can
determine if you are potentially a good candidate for this
surgery. |
| |
|
| |
1. Are you willing to take the risks associated with bariatric
surgery?
2. Are you willing to change your eating habits and your
lifestyle?
3. Have you dieted before, lost weight and gained it back?
|
| |
|
| |
If
you answered "yes" to these questions, then carefully
read the following information. It will help you to
understand the surgery and what to expect before, during,
and after surgery. It may also make it easier for
you to decide whether or not Obesity/Bariatric surgery is
an option for you. |
